We at “the little farm of the owl” are entering our 8th year as a pesticide and herbicide-free CSA. Juvencio works the farm full-time. Lyn works the farm part-time. We have 3 children: Jacob 13, Diego 10 and Eva Luna 7. The farm is located 15 miles west of Portland in a part of Hillsboro known as Helvetia. We have created a community and you have direct access to the farmers and the fields where your food is grown. The menagerie of animals and pleasant orchard make for a great weekly outing with the kids.
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. This means you share in the joys of farm fresh produce and help defray some of the risk of farming. Members of the farm pledge in advance to cover the anticipated costs of the farm operation and farmer’s salary. In return, they receive shares in the farm’s bounty during the growing season, and they gain the satisfaction of reconnecting to those who grow food and the earth in which it is grown. Members also share in the risks, including poor harvests due to unfavorable weather or pests (we call them the “10 plagues”).
Are we organic?
We strive to offer vegetables and fruits grown with care in accordance with the Oregon Tilth’s organic practices. We are not certified organic. Our land is prepared with fresh compost and managed in a sustainable fashion. We manage to feed 40 member households on about 1 acre of planted land. Our goats are raised with care and given antibiotics only when ill. If ill, their milk will not be used for cheese making. All cheese is made from pasteurized milk. We value member contribution and suggestions, so please let us know how we can improve and if we are meeting your expectations.
